3 Days in the Okavango Delta

What an incredible three days in the Okavango Delta!

We left Maun in an open safari truck and headed deep into the concession, where we traded bikes for mokoros (traditional dugout canoes) and explored the incredible maze of waterways. Our guide, Master, was amazing, sharing fascinating stories about the animals, the people and how the delta works.

But the real highlight came on our first afternoon. We tracked a pack of five African wild dogs as they woke up and headed out hunting. We followed them through the bush as they chased their prey, eventually catching up just as they began feeding. Absolutely incredible!

The next morning brought another unforgettable sight: four male lions feeding on an elephant kill, with jackals and vultures joining the feast. We also found lionesses with cubs and followed a herd of more than 40 elephants. Watching the elephants up close – complete with a few very angry trumpets – was pretty spectacular.

Our final morning took us back into the waterways by mokoro, followed by a bush walk where we learned about sausage trees, rhinos, elephants and how the animals shape the landscape. We even spotted a Cape Buffalo.

We saw an amazing variety of wildlife over the three days: elephants, hippos, lions, wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, warthogs, lechwe, buffalo, ostriches, jackals, mongoose, aardwolf, baboons, countless birds and more.

And in between all the wildlife, there were campfires, warm facecloths, bush breakfasts, incredible meals and plenty of laughs with our new friends from Barcelona.

Oh, and it was our anniversary!  What a way to celebrate. The Okavango Delta was everything we hoped for and more. Three days we definitely won’t forget!
